Everything you need to know about emergency pain relief from a dentist

Have you ever had toothache? It is annoying to feel dull pain in your gums or teeth. Instead of ignoring it, understand that this is nature’s way to get your attention. There are many levels of pain. Some may be more bothersome than others, while others can be unbearable.

The local dentist can provide pain relief options for patients. These are the pain relief methods that emergency dentists use to treat patients with pain.

Local Anesthesia – This is an effective and quick way to treat dental pain. The anaesthetist injects the patient at the appropriate locations to numb the area. Injections are usually used to prepare for treatment but can also be administered to treat pain from dental trauma.

Treating the Infection – When toothache is due to an infection, it is best to treat the problem. It is better to treat the root cause than trying to manage the pain. Any of the responsive Emergency Dentists in Sydney CBD, or anywhere else in Australia, would remove the infection and prescribe antibiotics.

Nitrous Oxide- Also known as laughing gas or nitrous oxide, nitrous oxide can be safely mixed with oxygen to calm anxious patients. Dentists prefer nitrous oxide because it is easy to control the amount and there is no need for needles. The effects are immediate after inhaling the gas. While laughing gas is safe for the elderly and children, dentists are well-trained in using nitrous oxide.

General Anaesthetic This is the most powerful and comprehensive form of Anaesthesia. It involves an intravenous injection which puts the patient in unconsciousness. This is used when severe treatment is needed. Surgical operations cannot be performed if the patient is unconscious. A qualified anaesthetist must be present to administer a general anaesthetic. This person is responsible for managing the patient during the entire procedure. To ensure safety, there is some risk involved.

Oral Sedation There are many drugs that can be orally taken to relieve pain. They must be prescribed by a dentist or physician. Prescription painkillers can cause extreme drowsiness. You should not drive or operate machinery while taking this type of medication.

Over-The-Counter Painkillers – These can be purchased at any pharmacy. Paracetamol or ibuprofen are good for general pain relief. People have low pain thresholds when it comes to toothache. Most will seek pain relief in some way. Home remedies such as clove oil or swilling alcohol around your mouth can provide short-term relief. However, this is not recommended for anyone under 18.
